Talk to the Mayor..
Hi Elsie, I don't see the police doing a lot of proactive patrol, which is a big concern, considering the crime problems we have had here in LaGrange recently. It is not uncommon to see officer Stratton sitting at Big R's or Chevron for 2 hours at a time. I have personally witnessed this on more than one occasion. I know the city cannot afford more officers, but maybe we can do more with the ones we have? If they would spend their time out patrolling instead of sitting in the same place, maybe it would prevent some of the vandalism and other crimes being committed by these juveniles that are out wandering the street. I think citizens like myself would feel reassured if we were to actually see them patrolling the neighborhood, instead of only seeing them posted up somewhere taking it easy and waiting for something to happen. It is not all of them, and I often do see them out patrolling late at night, but during the evening hours they are very rarely seen, other than at a restaraunt or gas station. Respectfully, I wish to remain anonymous but felt compelled to bring this to your attention. Thank you.
I will pass this on to the Chief and I will see what I can do. I appreciate your input as I cannot be everywhere even though I try. Could you call me when you observe this going on and I will bring it to the correct person's attention. 639-1098. Thank you so much. Elsie

when is the bridge over the dam going to be done in Wilburn Park and for that matter why is nothing allowed on this lake. I was told its for insurance sake, if that is true how much do you think the city will be sued for if someone falls onto the concrete dam?
The LaGrange City Council took this bridge out of the budget and I am begging to get it put back. I will do it as soon as I can but money has been the problem. Thank you so much for your input. Elsie

The website says that Eddie Mundo park has a basketball court. Where is the basketball court?
We are working on that. Thanks. Elsie

Why doesn't LaGrange PD do anything about people parking in the street in residential neighborhoods? There is a city ordinance prohibiting it, correct?
I will pass this on to the Chief and the Code Enforcement Mediator. Thanks Elsie

Mayor: Can the Railroad lot across from the old Ace Hardware be cleaned up possiably screened in? Also any way to create a better visual to La Grange comming from the east? Not nearly as nice as comming to La Grange from the west. Thanks You
We are working on that problem. Thanks Elsie

Please have the city come mow the section of grass that is normally cut in Oak Leaf Terrace loacated on Oak Leaf Drive PLEASE!
Done. Elsie

We live on property that is next to Wilborn Park. We are all concerned about the quality of the water in the lake. Last year the lake nearly turned solidly green from algae on the lake and we had a real problem with mosquitos. This year I am afraid the problem has already begun. If you drive down Crystal Drive East to the end of the road and look at the lake you can see where the problem begins. There are certain fish and chemicals that could be put into the lake to help alleviate this problem. Who do we contact to help us? We also are concerned that the bridge ove the damn has been removed and a new on was to be built. Can you give us any information on the progress of the bridge being built? We love this little park but it needs to be better maintained for the health of our community. Thanks for all you do!
We took your problem into consideration and just invested $20000 and many man hours. There are new sonic cleaners and air diffusion equipment and we had the coon tail sprayed and things are looking up! Please let me know of any other concerns. I keep watch on the lake as much as possible. Thank you, Elsie

A friend just brought this iPhone app Lexington has started and I thought it might be a good relatively inexpensive way for the city to get more timely and accurate input from residents about problems. Just an idea. http://www.kentucky.com/2010/04/09/1216074/lexingtons-iphone-app-will-help.html P. S. I don't have an iPhone but I know many do and perhaps this works off other "smart" phones. My cell phone is definitely not smart.
Thanks, I will look into it. Elsie

I have a very good friend in Lagrange. I'm trying to find some resources for her. She needs or wants to do some research on her ancestors. She is a lovely lady, she is 78 and still works 2-3 days a week! Do you know of a senior group or anything that could help her? Thanks so much!
The Oldham County Museum will be able to help. Elsie

hello.i have noticed that behind the courthouse where the county clerks office and sheriffs office building that there is two parking spots that allow 2 hr parking.this is being abused by a employee who parks there all day if the spot is open when she comes to work.thanks
Please call Judge Murner at 2229357 and thank you for your concern. This is the county court house and city employees do not park there. Elsie

hello mayor, Is there a policy for the city parks that if your under 18 you must have parental supervision just wondering thank you
Yes, there needs to some type of supervision, be it a sitter or someone with some authority over the children. Vandalism has been a problem and some animals have been killed. For the safety of the children under 18 and the safety of others, some type of supervision would be helpful. Elsie

Hi Mayor, The water tower at Ft. Pickens Road reads: La Grange 1840. But, the welcome sign coming into La Grange reads established 1827. Did it take horse & buggy that long to get to the other side of town? Why the different dates?
The City was established as a city in 1827 but did not get it's Charter until 1840. Elsie

Mayor Carter, Thank you for looking into the drainage issue on Jericho Road. The drainage in the Bluegrass area is much better now that the ditches have been cleared out. It rained earlier this week and the water seemed to be staying in the ditches and not running into the road. We're still getting the gravel run off from the driveways across from Hoffman Lane, but short of paving them, I'm not sure what can be done there. I wasn't sure if they were private property or the property of the water company and if anything could be done about them or not. Just thought it was worth asking. Thanks again for looking into the drainage issues, rainy day drives on Jericho Road are much improved now. Sincerely, Beth Phillips
Beth
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will pass this information on to the works department. We are really wanting to stay on top of this matter to keep it under control. Elsie

Subject: Hunting in restricted areas along New Moody Lane. I have expressed a concern over the amount of gunfire in the wooded area along New Moody Lane. As like most of us, I work during the day and have noticed the gunfire daytime Saturday and Sunday to about 6PM and Weekdays from 4 PM to 6 PM. I am not opposed to hunting and enjoy the sport often. My concern is when I first reported this issue to you a week or so ago, I was raking leaves in my front yard when I heard a round go through the upper limbs of my trees next to where I was working. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Mr, Lyttle
We have spoken with the La Grange Police department on this matter. They are going to patrol this area during these hours, also they will be talking with Fish and Wildlife. Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention. Elsie

Mayor I watched the CH 25 show of city council last month, I'll keep my comments to myself about what I saw. After sitting through the entire thing, I still do not know what was the final outcome in refrence to 2nd ave closing/staying open, also can you please advise on what the new configuration is for at the 2nd ave crossing and where do we stand on 2nd ave staying open (crossing gates)/closing as of today?
Open Thanks Elsie

When is the next La Grange City Council Meeting? I can't find any posting of the meetings on this website. Thanks.
John, City Council Meetings are the First (1st) Monday of the month, unless its a holiday. At the time it moves to the next day. The meetings are posted on this sites home page. Elsie

To the Mayor of La Grange Oldham County Kentucky My name is Jeannette K. Rook I have visited your city every summer and I usually stay a week. I do lots of genealogy in that area. Henry, Shelby and Oldham County Kentucky. I work the Davis-Barnhill-Boone Family. Well this past year I have been working on James William Barnhill's children. He is Grandfather was William Barnhill and His Grandmother was Ruth Boone. James William Barnhill had a total of 8 children. One died at birth. I am going you about the first son of James William Barnhill. His name was Dr. REV Oliver Paul Barnhill. He was born in 1878 La Grange Oldham County Kentucky. He became the most popular and powerful preacher in NY. He is a much bigger celebrity then D.W. Griffith. However, your historical society fell a sleep at the wheel on this one. They truly miss this one. I try to tell them. However, I got transferred to many different areas and I just hung up on them. Dr. REV Oliver Paul Barnhill Performed the wedding ceremony of the last century to the world greatest Opera singer of all times. http://jeannettestakeonlife.blogspot.com/2009/03/celebrity-marriages-performed-by-oliver.html However, there is more to James William Barnhill's children. I will have a publishing real soon and it will take your little town by storm. Sincerely Jeannette K. Rook 220 Golden POnd Ave OAk Grove, KY 42262
Thank you very much for this information. We are always interested in knowing about the people who have lived here in the past. We would enjoy any other information you can pass on to us. We will also pass this and any other info to the Oldham Country History Center. Thanks again and I really enjoyed your blog Elsie

Hello mayor, this is your great nephew TJ Barr. The last time I visited La Grange I was very pleased with the new additions. I think they are great improvements and I think you are doing a great job.
Thank You TJ Elsie

Hello Mayor, I'm wondering if someone could look into the drainage issues along Jericho Road between Bluegrass and the Hoffman Lane area? The first problem area is as you're heading out Jericho Road towards Hoffman Lane, just before you get to Bluegrass near the green metal building on the left. Water drains from the rock wall behind this building and the ditches on either side of the driveway and runs into the street sometimes covering the entire lane coming into LaGrange. This last time it rained there was standing water in this area for over a week. This creates a dangerous situation for hydroplaning, and if you are coming into town, you can't get into the opposite lane to avoid it as you are at the bottom of a hill and can't judge oncoming traffic enough to be able to do this. The second spot is the two driveways on either side of the fenced in LaGrange Utilities area just across from Hoffman Lane. The gravel from these driveways washes away every time it rains and comes across Jericho Road and down Hoffman Lane. It makes it very difficult to pull out onto Jericho Road from Hoffman Lane as you are on a hill and your tires spin on the gravel. This is also a dangerous situation for bicyclists and motorcyclists in the area as well. There are drainage ditches along Jericho Road, but weeds have grown up in them and they don't appear to be deep enough to handle the rain runoff in many areas. I'm not sure what the answer is to the driveway runoff, but I hope that you could have someone look into this and see if anything can be done, it would make driving in this area much easier and safer. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Beth, Thank you for sending me this information. I have passed it on to our Works Department and they will be looking into these matters. Elsie

Mayor, is it possible next year for the city tax bill to reflect how the tax dollars are utilized? It would look similar to the county bill. Break down the 2% into fractions and the dollar amount for each. Is this info available in your office now? Thanks
Thank you for your suggestion. We will check into this and see how we can do it. Elsie

Good Morning Mayor, I am just curious as to why someone that has been put in jail for killing a baby has access to the internet let alone social networking sites. Seems pretty ridiculous to me. Is there a way this can stop?
As this is a state issue you would need to contact the Department of Corrections. Elsie

those barriers that wwent up by the four way stop are ugly...why put those up?
The barriers are there to help us keep our Quite Zone. If you have any furter questions or need more explaination please feel free to contact me at City Hall. Elsie

Hello, it would be helpful if the date and time of the city council meetings were posted on the city webpage. Please post this information on the webpage. Thanks

Good morning Mayor, Have you and your folks had the time and opportunity to look into the WiFi proposal of the Oldham County Leadership Group? If I can do anything drop me a line. Thanks, Jim Miller
Jim
Thanks for helping with this. I am looking forward to our meeting later this week. Elsie

Ms. Carter: My name is Eric Bryant and I live in LaGrange. My company (Eagle Sign & Design)recently replaced all the street, traffic signs and posts in downtown Taylorsville to spruce up the downtown area. It looks great and I thought I'd ask you if you'd consider doing that for our city ? Or have any plans to do that ? Thanks, Eric Bryant
Mr. Bryant: I have not been to Taylorsville recently. With that being said, I am not sure just what it is that you did to the downtown area. If you would like to send me photo please feel free to do that. You can reach me at mayor@lagrangeky.net. Thanks Elsie

For nearly the past year my front yard has been in shambles from the excavations for the new fiber optics being laid by Watts Brothers Cable Construction for AT&T. I live at the corner of Jericho and Latimer, directly across the street from Lesco. I have contacted the field superintendent for Watts who is Gerald Gessup (502-545-0837) , several times over the last SEVERAL MONTHS he has told me that "We will be getting on that next week." I understand that Jericho road and the easements surrounding it are under state management, however I do not know who to speak to. Obviously what is being done within the confines of the easement is outside the bounds of my control, however there wasn't a silt screen put up and a good majority of the loose dirt has washed into my yard. Not to mention that the excavation (according to my property line stakes put up prior to the work beginning) has overshot the easement and is several feet into my yard. Since I am unable to stimulate Watts Bros into any action to resolve this mess, I ask for your help.
Mr. Griffin
I have passed this information to our Code Enforcement Officer. Hopefully we can get this matter taken care of for you. Thanks you for letting me know about your issue, this is the reason we have this forum. Thanks Elsie

Mr Mayor, I would like to know what can be done about the large fishing lake in Wilborn Park? The grass and algae are taking over that lake making it almost impossible to fish in. It is badly in need of more grass carp. I have tried emailing others from the website asking what can be done and if I can even donate some grass carp but have yet to receive a response. Plus, with the recent vandalism to the dock and bridge there, it is such a shame to let that lake stay in that shape. I grew up when that land was owned by L&N Railroad and only members were allowed there. I fished there with my dad and uncles so its a special place to me. I still drive up from Louisville on a regular basis to visit and fish there. Please see what can be done to get this lake back into shape where its fishable. Thank you
We are working on resolving this issue. Thank you very much for your concerns, we only have five men on the works department due to budget cuts. We do not have the man power to take care of all the issues with the lake. We have addressed the bridge problem. If you have grass carp that are 6 inches or less, we would appreciate them. You can contact City Hall for any further information 222-1433 Elsie

If someone is interested in running for City Council, how and when does one apply. Thanks.
You need to go to the County Clerks Office. The phone number there is 222-9311. Thank you, Elsie

Mayor Carter, isn't the skate park owned by the city? If so, then isn't it the responsibility of the city and not the skaters? I appreciate your intent to provide a healthy outlet for the city's youth, but I personally know many of these young people. They are not innocent and pure. In fact, the majority of them are ne'er do wells. You should know that there is drug trafficking and drug use going on at the skate park. And most of the skaters should be home studying or reading. If the racist graffiti hasn't yet been removed, then please do this right away. And if you think that crime does not pay in this area, please attend criminal court and see for yourself. There is virtually no criminal sanction for nonviolent crime anymore. The city has a responsibility to remove racist graffiti from city-owned property, but if you want to avoid this in the future, just remove the skate park altogether.
I would like to sit down with you to discuss this matter. Please call me at City Hall to schedule a meeting with me. Thanks Elsie

Mr. Mayor Your Town is a Very nice Place And i Soon hope to Be moving There.
Let me be the first to say, "WELCOME TO LA GRANGE". If you have any questions please contact us. Elsie

Mayor, I have been trying to find on the internet on how to file a formal complaint on one of the guards at the oldham co. jail, but I have had no luck, I was hoping you might be able to help. Feel free to contact me if you like. Thanks
Donald, The Oldham County Jail is a county facility. I would suggest that you contact the office of the County Judge D. Murner, someone there should be able to advise you of what you need to do. Thanks Elsie

Where does one go to seek employment opportunities with city government?
You may came to City Hall and ask for an application. Thanks Elsie

Hi Mayor, are you planning to run for re-election in 2010?
Do you think I should? Let me know. Elsie

Hi Mayor, I am not from Lagrange Kentucky, but I am trying to get some important info and I am not sure who to call, so when I went on this site and saw "talk to the Mayor" I thought that was great, who else better to talk to than the Mayor, when ever it's a good time for you could you contact me I just have a couple of questions, and I will also be bring up having this part of a web site like this to my city.
Hi Tanya, Thanks for visiting or site, some one will be in touch with you soon. Thanks again Elsie

Good-afternoon my friend !!! I would love to get the "Love Thy Neighbor" project started in La Grange, KY !!!! There is no one who cares more about the community then you and I know we can make this the most successful project to benifit Oldham County and neighboring counties. You have always amazed me with your ability to handle and care for...and LOVE this city and it's people !!! Love you !!!! Brandi Heilman 812-701-5642
Brandi, It was very good to hear from you. Let me know how it works and I will get a line on people to help with it. Love Elsie

Dear Mayor I inquired about the farming practices and the residence on the OCEDA property along hwy 53. My inquiry is regarding the use of this property. Is it currently being leased? Thank you
Mark, The property you are talking about is the OLDA property and we are not leasing anything I know of. Thank you Elsie

There is much activity on the acreage owned by the OCEDA including farming/cattle grazing as well as a trailer inhabiting people on the property directly off hwy 53. Is the property being leased annually for these agricultrual practies? If so where are the details of these arrangements? Also the fence is quite shoddy along the hwy who is liable if livestock get out and are involved in an accident? also is the city leasing the trailer on this property? are the revenues placed back into the general fund? Great site thanks
There is a farm adjacent to the park, and I know of no one who lives on OLDA property. We so have someone who cuts the center of the property for us, but we have no cattle. Thanks Elsie

I came to your town today to explore and take photos for a digital photography class I'm taking at Kentucky State University. I really like La Grange. The people I met were very welcoming (especially the woman who owns the cafe next to where the mayor lives - she showed me the beautiful gazebo behind her apartment), the downtown shopping district was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the train that came through the town twice while I was there. I walked along the railroad and was taking pictures in the skate park when I found something that disturbed me. It was some racist graffiti. I can only hope that this is a recent addition to the skate park, and that if the people of the city knew about it, they would have removed it. Graffiti can make great art; the graffiti on the sides of the trains that run through La Grange is a testament to that. However, the graffiti in the skate park is not art; it is hate. I do hope that the next time I come to La Grange, it will not be there. If you decide that you are going to have volunteers come and paint over the graffiti at the skate park, I would be happy to come help. Just let me know. I'm including a link to the picture I took of the graffiti: http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z277/leafytreeful/racistgraffitiatskatepark.jpg Thank you, Staci S. Frankfort, KY
Thanks for the information on the graffiti. The park is the responsibility of the skaters. I did NOT know that this had been done and I will not only have it removed by the kids but will also find out who did this. The skaters are a good bunch of kids and will tell me. The others have time on their hands, but maybe community service will show them Crime Dont Pay, and that there is no such thing as a secret. Thanks Again Elsie

Hey Ms. Mayor! It's Chelsea Corbin here. I'm writing an article about the upcoming Earth Hour for my school newspaper and while on the website I saw that La Grange is signed up to participate! I was just wondering what plans we have set for Saturday, how we got involved, the level of community involvement, etc. I'll try calling tomorrow too, but I got excited when I found this that I thought I'd give it a go! Thanks! Chelsea
Chelsea, I am very sorry that I did not get with you on this sooner. We were able to turn off all non essential lights in Downtown La Grange. And we had participation from several businesses in town also. We were very excited about this and hope to make the next one better and get more involvement. Thanks for making a difference Elsie

I am glad to see the City Council Agenda posted on the web site. I hope that the Agenda for the next meeting will be posted soon.
Yes Chuch we are doing our best to keep our site up to date and will be listing the Agendas for the council meetings as soon as we can. Thanks Elsie

I think an employment section for LaGrange would be helpful information.
Jennifer, Thank you for your question, maybe we can set up a link with the Oldham Era's employment section. I will check into it. Elsie
